RPX Defensive Patent Aggregation Service Adds HP and Nokia to Membership
SAN FRANCISCO - July 16, 2009 - RPX Corporation today announced that HP and Nokia have joined the RPX Defensive Patent Aggregation Service. The announcement comes just weeks after RPX announced that Sony Corporation had become a member.
With HP, Nokia and Sony, a total of 14 companies have now joined the RPX Defensive Patent Aggregation Service since its introduction last November.
RPX was formed to reduce costs from patent litigation and assertions initiated by non-practicing entities (NPEs), a persistent problem that costs technology companies worldwide billions of dollars annually. NPEs do not create intellectual property through internal innovation and R&D but instead acquire patents to extract licensing fees from companies that produce and sell products and services.
In contrast, RPX acquires patent rights and provides them as a defensive patent aggregation for an annual fee that can be a fraction of a single patent assertion defense. To date RPX has acquired more than $85 million in patent rights in the mobile, Internet search, telecommunications, consumer electronics and RFID markets, and is on track to acquire more than $100 million in patent rights in its first year of operation.
"Patent litigation and assertions by NPEs is a global problem," said John Amster, RPX co-CEO. “Our considerable increase in membership during the first eight months of operation – despite trying economic times – is a clear indicator that the RPX service delivers real, measurable value."
