Sony Joins RPX Defensive Patent Aggregation
Co-Hosts Patent Litigation Conference at Sony Headquarters for Intellectual Property
Professionals from Japan’s Leading Technology Companies

TOKYO - June 24, 2009 - RPX Corporation today announced that Sony Corporation has joined the RPX Defensive Patent Aggregation. With Sony, 14 companies have joined the RPX service since its introduction last November.

Sony is the latest Asian technology giant to become a member, and joins Seiko-Epson, Panasonic, LG Electronics, and Samsung, all of which are already RPX members. RPX was formed to reduce costs from patent litigation and assertions initiated by non-practicing entities, a growing problem that costs technology companies billions of dollars annually. These non-practicing entities, or NPEs, do not create intellectual property through internal innovation and R&D but simply acquire patents in order to extract licensing fees from companies that produce and sell products and services.

In conjunction with its membership, this upcoming Friday, June 26th, Sony will co-host a conference for Japanese intellectual property professionals who wish to discuss and learn more about the growing NPE problem. Topics will include the current state of NPE litigation as well as proactive patent acquisition opportunities that would be useful to Asian members. The conference will include a general session in the morning, followed by an afternoon session open only to RPX members.

"Asian technology companies are significantly more often the target of NPE litigation than U.S. companies and need a way to reduce their costs and risks," said John Amster, RPX co-CEO. During the conference, Amster will present current research on the cost of NPE-related defense and settlement costs incurred by Asian companies during the past three years, and how these costs compare to RPX membership. "In just seven months of operation, RPX is clearly having a strong positive effect on our members' bottom line," Amster added.

RPX acquires patent rights and provides them as a defensive patent aggregation for an annual fee that is typically a fraction of a single patent assertion defense. To date, RPX has acquired more than $90 million in patent rights in the mobile, Internet search, telecommunications, consumer electronics and RFID markets, and is on track to acquire more than $100 million in patent rights in its first year of operation.
