Eleven Technology Companies Join RPX in First Five Months
SAN FRANCISCO - March 31, 2009 - RPX Corporation today announced that five more technology companies have joined the RPX Defensive Patent Aggregation service, bringing total customers to 11 since the service was introduced last November.
IBM, Cisco, and Seiko-Epson are today joined by, Panasonic, Philips, LG Electronics, Samsung, and TiVo
that have signed on with RPX to reduce patent assertion and litigation costs initiated by non-practicing entities (NPEs) - a rapidly growing problem worldwide that costs technology companies billions of dollars annually. NPEs acquire patents, as opposed to creating them through research and development, solely for the purpose of aggressive offensive licensing and litigation against operating companies.
"Technology companies need a counterbalance to NPE assertion and litigation that doesn’t break the bank," said John Amster, RPX co-CEO. "Our business model and reasonable fees are clearly resonating with operating companies around the world."
RPX acquires patent rights and provides them as a defensive patent aggregation for an annual fee that is typically a fraction of a single patent assertion defense. To date RPX has acquired more than $70 million in patent rights in the mobile, Internet search, telecommunications, consumer electronics and RFID markets, and is on track to acquire over $100 million in patent rights in its first year of operation
